About the Human genome

Assembly

Homo sapiensThis release is based on the NCBI 36 assembly of the human genome [November 2005]. The data consists of a reference assembly of the complete genome plus the Celera WGS and a number of alternative assemblies of individual haplotypic chromosomes or regions.

The International Human Genome Sequencing Consortium have published their scientific analysis of the finished human genome.

Annotation

Since release 38 (April 2006) the gene annotation presented has been a combined Ensembl-Havana geneset, which incorporates more than 12,000 full-length protein-coding transcripts annotated by the Havana team with the Ensembl automatic gene build. The human genome sequence is now considered sufficiently stable that since 2004 the major genome browsers have come together to produce a common set of identifiers where CDS annotations of transcripts can be agreed and these identifiers are also shown.

The ENCODE (ENCyclopedia Of DNA Elements) project aims to find functional elements in the human genome.

What's New in Ensembl 45

Homo sapiens News

  • New functional genomics data
As of release 45, Ensembl Human will include a "Regulatory Build", integrating 8 genome-wide datasets to provide a single "best guess" set of regulatory elements.

  • CAGE data
New human CAGE ditags and updated mouse CAGE ditags have been added to Ensembl 45.
  • CCDS update
Some transcripts that were dropped from the CCDS set owing to poor quality have now been removed from Ensembl, and the stable ID archive updated accordingly.
  • Overlapping assembly entries
Some overlapping entries in the mappings between NCBI35 and NCBI36 (on human) and NCBIm35 and NCBIm36 (on mouse) have been removed from Ensembl 45.

General News

  • Removal of viral genes
Viral genes have been removed from all species with Ensembl genebuilds (i.e.
